Our Story
Jika Jika Community Centre has been bringing Northcote locals together and advocating for our community for over 40 years.
Connecting locals since 1983
Back in 1983, a group of Westgarth locals wanted to create a friendly space where people could come together, learn and support one another. That’s how Jika Jika Community Centre began – a place built on community, connection and inclusivity.
Today, we have two sites in Northcote. We offer a welcoming space where people can drop in for a cuppa and a chat, and take part in more than 30 activities and programs each week.
From social events and creative workshops to health and wellbeing, music, movement and dance programs, there’s something for everyone. Our programs are all about helping people connect, learn new skills and feel part of the local community.
We also have community spaces available to hire for workshops, social events, meetings and clubs.
Beyond our programs, we’re committed to supporting local people doing it tough through initiatives like our free food program. We also actively support social justice and work towards creating a more inclusive and connected community.
Guided by community values
Following the Neighbourhood Houses movement, which was started by inspiring Australian women back in the 1970s, we follow the principles of community ownership, inclusion, empowerment and lifelong learning. Our mission is all about helping locals connect, grow and thrive together. At Jika Jika, everyone belongs.

We’re part of the North East Neighbourhood House Network, where Neighbourhood Houses actively work together to provide direct support to their respective communities.
Our name and people
Jika Jika Community Centre sits on Wurundjeri land. We proudly carry the name of Billibellary, a respected Wurundjeri leader known as Jika Jika. He played a big role in early interactions between the Wurundjeri people and the new settlers along the Yarra River. We pay our respects to the traditional owners of this land, the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation.
The passionate people behind the magic
Our team is made up of amazing staff, volunteers and local supporters. They're the heart of what we do – making our community stronger every day.
