 L2P Learner Driver Mentoring Program

For Just two hours a week you could support a motivated young person in Darebin who does not have the support they need to get their drivers license. Young people in our program come from a diversity of backgrounds and situations. All want to increase their life opportunities by gaining their drivers license.

Young people in the program will have access to professional driving lessons but need someone to give them the driving practice needed to get their license.

Volunteers are supported, trained, insured and have access to a program car.

If you think you can help or want to find out more please contact Lesley at DIVRS on 9480 8206 or email L2P@divrs.org.au

Jika Jika Community Centre  - Volunteer Policy

Welcome to Jika Jika Community Centre

We are a ‘not for profit’ organisation managed by a volunteer Committee of Management. We aim to provide high quality programs and classes that reflect the needs of our area. Your support and involvement in our programs is critical to their success.

What is Volunteering

‘Volunteering is unpaid work which is of benefit to the community and the volunteer. It is done of the volunteer’s free will.’

Volunteering S.A. Inc

 Policy Statement

Jika Jika seeks to involve volunteers in the day to day running and management of the Centre.  Jika Jika believes that volunteers have a vital role in enhancing and expanding the management, services and activities provided by the Centre. The benefits of voluntary contributions are many and depend on the volunteers themselves, the staff who work with them and the wider community. Jika Jika will not seek to replace paid staff with volunteers.Volunteer rights are equally as important as their responsibilities and this policy has been adopted and endorses this set of Rights and Responsibilities.

Volunteer Recruitment & Interviewing

Jika Jika will recruit volunteers only for specific jobs, and appropriate job descriptions will be developed for each position. Jika Jika will seek to match the volunteer’s skills, talents, and aspirations to the volunteering jobs available. Volunteers will be interviewed as a process to match jobs to appropriate skills, as well as to give volunteers the chance to evaluate whether the job meets their own needs.

 Job Descriptions

There will be written job descriptions for all volunteer positions which will describe the purpose, task, location, skills needed, timeframe, supervision and accountability for the job.

Provision of Orientation and Adequate Training

Staff development at Jika Jika applies equally to all staff and volunteers. The volunteer coordinator will provide appropriate training for the role of each volunteer.

Rights and General Principles

Equal rights apply to both volunteer workers and paid staff at Jika Jika under the:

·         Equal Opportunity Act

·         Privacy Act

·         Occupational Health and Safety

·         Insurance Policies

Volunteers have the right to negotiate hours and place of work.Volunteers have the right to expect to work in a non-exploitative environment and to be treated with dignity.

Integration of Volunteers into the Centre's Structure

Volunteers will be recognised as members of the Centre team, and are entitled to participate at relevant meetings and will be consulted in decision-making that is appropriate to their job.

Place of Volunteers in the wider organisation

Volunteers are entitled to become members of Jika Jika Community Centre.  As members, they are entitled to vote in elections for the Committee of Management. They are also entitled to stand for election to the Committee of Management.

Volunteers Responsibilities

Volunteers will take direction from the Jika Jika Manager or another designated supervisor.  It is the responsibility of the volunteer to undertake initial and ongoing training. Volunteers need to adhere to Jika Jika policies and procedures, and to observe the requirements of the Information Privacy Act and any policies and procedures undertaken to maintain the privacy of information collected. Volunteers are expected to act as ambassadors for the centre and to promote the centre in positive ways.

Insurance for Jika Jika Volunteers

All volunteer workers carrying out duties on behalf of Jika Jika Community Centre will be insured by Personal Accident Insurance cover through Department of Human Services Insurance.

Personal insurance Coverage

The insurance described in this section has been arranged for the benefit of Jika Jika and other non-government agencies, funded by the Department of Human Services. Under this policy of Personal Accident Insurance, volunteers are covered for personal injury resulting from an accident occurring to a volunteer whilst involved in an authorised activity. It does not cover sickness. Volunteers are covered for personal accident. The insurance cover includes “income protection, medical and death benefits to all volunteers of the named insured in the event of an accident occurring while performing voluntary labour or travelling to and from the location of voluntary labour.”
